Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
JULY 11, 1921
William Howard Taft was sworn in as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
He was appointed by President Warren G. Harding and became the only person to serve both as the 27th President of the United States and Supreme Court Chief Justice.
He used to serve in the Superior Court of Cincinnati, Solicitor General and Court of Appeals judge.
He was appointed as governor general of the Philippines during the term of President William McKinley.
As governor general, Taft worked to make the Filipinos partners with America that would lead to self government.
He treated Filipinos as co equals and never imposed racial discrimination at social events.
Under President Theodore Roosevelt, he was appointed as Secretary of War.
Chief Justice Taft was conservative on business matters and advances in individual rights were attributed during his term.
Owing to poor health, he resigned in 1930 and died a month later.
Taft was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, the first president and first Supreme Court justice to be interred there.
