The second contingent of American troops arrived under Brigadier General Francis V. Greene.
The contingent called the Philippine Expeditionary Force later became the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, VIII Corps. Major General Wesley Merritt, the Commander in Chief of the Philippine Expedition together with his staff arrived in Cavite on July 25, 1898.
Brigadier General Thomas McArthur Anderson arrived earlier on June 30, 1898 with his first contingent.
The third contingent headed by Brigadier General Arthur MacArthur arrived on July 30, 1898.
A total of 12,000 U.S. troops were deployed in the Philippines from June to July 1898.
Gen. Greene had a prominent part in the Battle of Manila where U.S. and Spanish forces staged a mock battle between themselves.
A few months later, General Emilio Aguinaldo and his forces fought the Americans in the Philippine-American War.
