Eugenio H. Lopez Sr.

JULY 20, 1901

Eugenio "Eñing" Hofileña López Sr. (July 20, 1901 – July 5, 1975), a business figure and media magnate in the Philippines, was the founder of the Lopez Group of Companies. 

He was born on July 20, 1901 in Jaro, Iloilo City and belonged to the Lopez clan of Iloilo, one of the richest and influential political families in the Philippines. 

His parents were Benito Villanueva Lopez, a governor of Iloilo, and Presentacion Javelona Hofileña. He was the older brother of Philippine Vice President Fernando Lopez. 

He married Pacita de Santos Moreno and they have five children: Eugenio Jr., Oscar, Presentation, Manuel and Roberto. 

He enrolled at the Ateneo de Manila and graduated cum laude in 1919. He then took up law at the University of the Philippines in Manila and graduated in 1923. He earned his master of laws degree from Harvard University. 

After the second World War, he acquired The Manila Chronicle and established the TV network Chronicle Broadcasting Network. It then merged with Alto Broadcasting System that led to the establishment of ABS-CBN where he sat as chairman. 

He was also the president of the Manila Electric Company (MERALCO). 

He used to be the political supporter of President Ferdinand E. Marcos until they had a falling out. 

Don Eugenio H. Lopez Sr. died on July 5, 1975 after a bout with cancer.
