SAI Building Collapses

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 3)

JULY 23, 2004

The eight-story commercial-residential SAI Building located at the corner of Padre Rada and Juan Luna Streets in Divisoria, Binondo, Manila collapsed.

The 5-year-old building has been leaning towards the Italy Marketing building across the street before it crashed on it at 4:40 p.m.

There were no fatalities as authorities safely evacuated around 200 occupants earlier and cordoned the area.

The building housed a branch of the Insular Savings Bank, several residential apartments, and a marketing firm.

Manila Mayor Lito Atienza commended officials of the Manila Disaster Coordinating Council (MDCC), fire marshal Pablito Cordeta and police and barangay officials for the early and orderly evacuation of the building.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the National Disaster Coordinating Council, the Manila City Government, and the Department of Public Works and Highways helped secure the area.
