Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 3):
JULY 26, 1969
United States President Richard Nixon and First Lady Pat Nixon arrived at the Manila International Airport in Manila for a state visit.
They were welcomed by President Ferdinand E. Marcos, his wife First Lady Imelda R. Marcos, and their children Irene, Ferdinand Jr. and Imee, along with thousands of Filipinos.
They were later given a state dinner hosted by Pres. Marcos and FL Imelda.
That very day, Gloria Diaz who won the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant on July 19, 1969 in Miami, Florida left New York to Manila via Honolulu for her homecoming. The first man, astronaut Neil Armstrong, landed on the moon on the same day.
Pres. Nixon announced that "The United States conquered the moon but the Philippines has conquered the Universe... I think it is significant to note that the first world capital that I am visiting, after having greeted the first men to have set foot on the moon, is Manila, the capital of the Philippines."
Among President Nixon's many visits to the Philippines was when he was vice president in 1956. He affirmed the American government's recognition of Philippine ownership and sovereignty over the American bases on the nation's soil.
