Francisco Guilledo Passes

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

JULY 14, 1925

Francisco Guilledo (August 1, 1901 – July 14, 1925), also known as Pancho Villa, Asia’s first World Flyweight Champion,  passed away after complications when a tooth was extracted.

Pancho Villa was born in Iloilo and stood only 5 feet and 1 inch (154 cm) tall and weighed not more than 114 pounds (51 kg).

His boxing career started in 1919 and he brought honor to the Philippines by winning various titles.

He rose to fame by knocking out Jimmy (“Mighty Atom”) Wilde of Wales in the seventh round on June 18, 1923 making him one of the greatest Flyweight fighters in boxing history.

During his career, he had 73 wins (22 by knockouts), 5 losses, 4 draws, and 23 no decisions (a common result in boxing’s early days).

In 1994, Francisco “Pancho Villa” Guilledo was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
