Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):
JULY 14, 1960
U.S. Pres. Dwight Eisenhower arrived in the Philippines for a state visit and was met by Pres. Carlos P. Garcia and First Lady Leonila Garcia.
Eisenhower delivered a speech before a joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives and recalled his four years in the country beginning in 1935 as Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s special assistant.
He added that Luneta was “for more than four years the scene of my habitual evening walks.” and “to this day it lives in memory as one of the most pleasant, indeed even one of the most romantic spots, I have known in this entire world.”
