Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 3):
JULY 21, 1654
Pedro Calungsod (July 21, 1654 - April 2, 1672), was born in Ginatilan, Cebu. He studied at a Jesuit school where he mastered catechism and learned Spanish.
Being groomed for missionary work, he honed his skills in carpentry as well as drawing, painting, singing and acting.
Calungsod was the companion of Spanish Jesuit missionary Diego Luis de San Vitores in propagating Christianity.
In 1668, he accompanied San Vitores to preach to the Chamorro natives in Tumon, Guam.
The village chief named Mata'pang got mad after they baptized his daughter. With the help of Hirao, a villager, they killed San Vitores and Calungsod and the bodies were thrown in the waters of Tumon Bay.
Pope John Paul II beatified Calungsod on March 5, 2000. Pope Benedict XVI canonized him on October 21, 2012.
San Pedro Calungsod is Cebu's first saint and the second Filipino saint after St. Lorenzo Ruiz of Manila.
