Engracia Cruz-Reyes (April 16, 1892 - July 6, 1975), the Mother of Filipino Cooking and an icon in the food and restaurant industry passed away on this day in 1975.
Born in Navotas to a poor family, she opened an eatery (carinderia) in 1928 and named it Lapulapu that served only Filipino food.
She then sold adobo sandwiches in Luneta and in 1936, she started a rolling restaurant which she called “The Aristocrat.”
Two years later, The Aristocrat Restaurant opened in Dewey Boulevard. The mother of Teresita Reyes, she was a recipient of several awards.
