Geronima Josefa Tomelden Pecson (December 19, 1895 - July 31, 1989), the first woman senator of the Philippines passed away.
Pecson was born in Lingayen, Pangasinan and was a teacher, social worker, leader in nation building and an advocate for women’s right to vote.
Before winning the senate seat in 1947, she was President Jose P. Laurel’s private secretary and executive secretary of President Manuel Roxas.
She headed the Senate Committees on Education, Health, Public Welfare, and the Joint Congressional Committee on Education.
Pecson was the first Filipino and first woman elected to the executive board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1950.
She was instrumental for the passing of notable laws on education such as the Free and Compulsory Education Act and the Vocational Education Act.
Geronima Josefa Tomelden Pecson founded the Foundation of Youth Development of the Philippines in 1955 and was its administrator till her death.
