Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
JULY 30, 1896
Spanish Governor-General Ramon Blanco wrote to Dr. Jose Rizal who was exiled in Dapitan. He informed Rizal that his request to travel to Cuba to serve as a doctor in the Spanish Army during the Cuban Revolution was granted.
On August 1, 1896, Rizal and Josephine Bracken left Dapitan bringing the letter of recommendation from Blanco.
Meanwhile, the Katipunan, a secret society led by Andres Bonifacio was gearing up for a nationwide uprising against the Spaniards.
While on his way to Cuba, Rizal was arrested in Spain and was imprisoned in Barcelona on October 6, 1896.
He was brought back to Manila to stand trial after being implicated in the revolution through the people he knew in the Katipunan.
