JULY 7, 1864
Isabelo de los Reyes Sr. (July 7, 1864 – October 10, 1938), the “Father of Filipino Socialism” was born in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
Don Belong as he was known, was a prominent writer, editor, publisher, labor activist, Manila councilor and senator (1923).
In 1902, he founded the first labor union, the Union Obrera Democratica and the Iglesia Filipina Independiente or the Aglipayan Church with Gregorio Aglipay, a fellow Ilocano as first bishop.
Years later, he was made honorary bishop of the church. De los Reyes was excommunicated by Pope Leo XIII in 1903.
