Delegates for the Constitutional Convention tasked to frame the 1935 Constitution of the Commonwealth of the Philippines were elected on this day.
The Tydings-McDuffie Act or the Philippine Independence Act was earlier passed which allowed for the establishment of the Commonwealth with a ten-year transition period prior to full independence which was set on the 4th of July.
On July 30, 1934, the Constitutional Convention headed by Claro M. Recto convened in Manila and the constitution was approved on February 8, 1935.
It was passed to US President Franklin D. Roosevelt who approved it on March 23, 1935 and was ratified by a popular vote on May 14, 1935.
Elections were then held on September 17, 1935 with presidential candidate Manuel L. Quezon and his vice presidential running mate Sergio OsmeƱa beating Emilio Aguinaldo, Gregorio Aglipay and others.
The Commonwealth of the Philippines was inaugurated on November 15, 1935 with a crowd of 300,000 gathered at the Legislative Building.
