Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):
JULY 15, 1995
Pres. Fidel Ramos signed Proclamation No. 615 declaring the Philippine eagle as the national bird.
The Philippine eagle scientifically known as Pithecophaga jafferyi is a national treasure and a source of national pride.
They are now only found in the surrounding areas of Mt. Apo in Davao.
Efforts have been made to protect and save the Philippine eagle which is now an endangered species and is constantly threatened by deforestation caused by illegal logging and other factors such as mining, poaching, pollution and exposure to pesticides.
