Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
JULY 3, 1966
The Beatles arrived at the Manila International Airport aboard a Cathay Pacific flight for a scheduled two day concert at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium. Around 5,000 fans greeted them.
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were driven to the Philippine Navy headquarters at the Manila harbour for a press conference.
The four were then brought to a luxury yacht owned by Manolo Elizalde, a friend of the local concert promoter Ramon Ramos Jr.
After a few hours, they were taken to the Manila Hotel where they were booked.
First Lady Imelda Marcos invited the group to be in MalacaƱang Palace at 11:00 AM but they were not able to do so because their manager earlier declined any invitation while they were talking to the promoter in Tokyo.
The band performed at the stadium with around 80,000 fans in attendance.
