Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):
JULY 6, 1892
Four days after Jose Rizal organized the La Liga Filipina, Gov. Gen. Eulogio Despujol ordered him arrested and imprisoned in Fort Santiago.
The following day under heavy guard, Rizal left Manila for Dapitan, a sleepy town in Mindanao onboard the steamer Cebu.
He lived in the residence of Captain Ricardo Carnicero, the commandant who became his friend and gave good reports about him to the governor.
In Dapitan, Rizal improved his artistic and literary skills, created community projects, engaged in business and fell in love with Josephine Bracken.
