Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
AUGUST 12, 1901
The Thomasites, a group of American teachers on board the USAT Thomas, arrived in the Philippines to introduce a new public school system, teach basic education and train Filipino teachers with English as the medium of instruction.
The teachers, 365 males and 165 females left San Francisco on July 23, 1901.
The following year, more teachers were sent which totalled 1,074 Thomasites in the Philippines.
Teachers who came later during the first few years of the American colonial period were also known as Thomasites.
Earlier, U.S. President William McKinley appointed William Howard Taft as head of a commission that would continue the educational work undertaken by the U.S. Army.
The Taft Commission came up with Education Act No. 34 on January 21, 1901, which established the Department of Public Instruction, which was tasked to create a public school system in the Philippines.
The commission authorized the deployment of around 1,000 American educators to the Philippines.
