The Mock Battle Of Manila

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

AUGUST 13, 1898

Unaware of the signing of the peace protocol, the mock battle of Manila staged between US Admiral George Dewey and Spanish Gov. Gen. Fermin Jaudenes began at 7:30 a.m.

This was a scripted battle to show to the world the theatrical surrender of the Spanish forces.

Dewey’s ships bombarded Fort San Antonio de Abad while Gen. Wesley Merritt’s troops advanced to Manila.

Thinking the battle was real, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo’s forces led by Generals Pio Del Pilar, Gregorio del Pilar, Artemio Ricarte and Mariano Noriel engaged the Spaniards in four directions.
