Pres. Jose P. Laurel Dissolves The Second Republic

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

AUGUST 17, 1945

Pres. Jose P. Laurel formally dissolved the Second Philippine Republic after the Japanese surrendered to the Allied forces.

After the war, all laws and regulations by the Second Republic were considered illegal although Laurel was given his place as the 3rd president.

On October 14, 1943, the new republic was inaugurated with Laurel as president and Benigno S. Aquino as Speaker of the National Assembly.

Former President Emilio Aguinaldo and Gen. Artemio Ricarte raised the Philippine flag which was used during the Philippine-American War.
