Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 3):
AUGUST 18, 2021
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) declared August 18 as National Aspin Day to bring attention to the beauty of Aspins and their worth, and to stop the discrimination against them.
Animal welfare advocates coined the colloquial word aspin from "asong pinoy" which means Fiipino dog, to replace the askal (asong kalye) name of stray or mixed-breed dogs that roam the streets of urban and rural areas all over the country.
These dogs who are resourceful, intelligent, and street-smarts also deserve the love and care too.
PAWS is a registered non-profit organization which is dedicated to the protection and the promotion of humane treatment of all animals. It takes a firm stand on matters relating to animal welfare, and continues to lobby for better laws to ensure humane treatment of all animals.
PAWS Executive Director Anna Cabrera shared her thoughts in a video message saying "Today August 18 is the very first National Aspin Day where the spotlight is on the asong pinoy, intelligent, loving and while often overlooked and often considered as the underdog, has so much love to give. Aspins, their time to shine has come as the number one choice for families to love and to have as family pets. Let’s all love our aspins."
