Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
AUGUST 5, 2009
President Corazon “Cory” Cojuangco Aquino was laid to rest at the Manila Memorial Park.
The Requiem Mass was earlier held at the Manila Cathedral and was officiated by Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales, along with several bishops and priests.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s government gave an invitation to grant the former president a state funeral but the Aquino family declined the offer.
Initially, Aquino’s casket was at the St. Benilde Gymnasium of La Salle Green Hills before it was brought to the Manila Cathedral on August 3, 2009.
Cory Aquino died on August 1, 2009 at the Makati Medical Center due to cardiorespiratory arrest.
President Arroyo cut short her US trip to attend the wake and declared August 5, 2009 as a national day of mourning and a special non-working holiday all over the country.
