Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):
AUGUST 11, 1942
Gen. Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV (August 23, 1883 – September 2, 1953) together with ranking officers of the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) were shipped to Formosa (now Taiwan) and later to Japan after being held in a prison camp in Luzon.
Wainwright and his men earlier surrendered to the Japanese and were part of the Bataan Death March.
Mistreated in captivity, he was the highest ranking American POW and was freed by the Russian army in August 1945.
He returned to the Philippines to receive Gen. Yamashita’s surrender.
