Ferdinand Magellan Leaves Spain For Spice Islands

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

AUGUST 10, 1519

Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, in command of five ships provided by King Charles V of Spain, left Seville, Spain for an expedition in search of the Spice Islands.

The ships were the Trinidad, Magellan’s flagship, Juan de Cartagena’s San Antonio, Gaspar de Quesada’s Concepcion, João Serrão’s Santiago, and Luis Mendoza’s Victoria.

The total crew of 270 men included Magellan’s brother-in-law Duarte Barbosa, João Serrão, Estêvão Gomes, Enrique of Malacca, Francisco Albo, Juan de Cartagena, Antonio Pigafetta and Juan Sebastián Elcano.

Magellan’s fleet landed in Homonhon Island on March 16, 1521. He sailed for Cebu and arrived on April 7, 1521, and made friends with Rajah Humabon and his wife Hara Amihan.

The couple and their followers were baptized and an image of the Santo Niño was given to the queen as a gift.

He went to battle against Lapulapu the king of Mactan but was defeated and killed on April 27, 1521.

On September 6, 1522, Juan Sebastián Elcano along with 18 survivors on board the Victoria arrived back in Spain.

The expedition led by Magellan was the first to circumnavigate the globe and the first to navigate the strait in South America that connected the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans.
