Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 3):
AUGUST 17, 1935
Governor-General Frank Murphy granted conditional pardons to the 74 of the 87 members of the Sakdal party who were convicted and sentenced for taking part in the Sakdal Uprising.
He declared "that the interest of the public is not to punish the misguided and misled, but to preserve peace and order."
The Sakdal Uprising or the Sakdalista Uprising was a peasant rebellion led by Benigno Ramos, a disgruntled government clerk.
On May 2, 1935, armed groups seized municipal buildings in 14 towns in Central and Southern Luzon but the American authorities were able to crush them the following day leaving 100 Sakdalistas dead.
Ramos escaped to Tokyo, Japan and the Sakdals were disbanded.
The Sakdal movement was founded by Ramos in 1930. It called for the immediate independence from the United States. It also demanded estate redistribution, tax reductions, and more transparency in government. It has around 20,000 members who were able to influence hundreds of thousands of Filipinos.
