Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
AUGUST 16, 1861
The Basilica Minore de San Sebastian or San Sebastian Church was consecrated by Bernardo Nozaleda, the Archbishop of Manila after its status was elevated by Pope Leo XIII a year earlier.
Under the care of the Order of Augustinian Recollects, it is located at Plaza del Carmen in Quiapo, Manila.
The Neo-Gothic church was designed by Spanish architect Genaro Palacios and is the only all-steel church in Asia and the only prefabricated steel church in the world.
President Ferdinand Marcos issued Presidential Decree No. 260 making it a National Historical Landmark.
