Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

AUGUST 5, 1887

Dr. Jose P. Rizal arrived in Manila aboard the steamer Haiphong after five years in Europe.

His homecoming was met by the anger of the Dominican friars over his novel Noli Me Tangere.

An order banning the possession and reading of the novel was issued by Pedro Payo, the Archbishop of Manila.

In Calamba, he treated the eyes of his mother while his brother Paciano was at his side to protect him from those who wish to harm him.

Governor General Emilio Terrero who was a liberal soon assigned Jose Taviel de Andrade to be his bodyguard.
