Spanish Authorities Raid Diario De Manila

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

AUGUST 20, 1896

After the Katipunan was discovered that resulted in the raid of the Diario de Manila where various evidences were confiscated, many Filipinos suspected to be members were arrested and killed. 

Agustin de la Rosa, a member of Jose Rizal’s La Liga Filipina with his fellow masons were also arrested by the Guardia Civil. 

Andres Bonifacio who was not ready for a fully armed confrontation with the Spaniards called for an important meeting in Balintawak. 

Dr. Pio Valenzuela joined the group but surrendered to the Spanish authorities on September 1, 1896.
