Jovita Fuentes Passes

AUGUST 7, 1978

Jovita Fuentes (February 15, 1895 - August 7, 1978), the first National Artist for Music passed away in Manila. 

She made her international debut in opera as Cio Cio San in Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly in Italy’s Teatro Municipale di Piacenza. 

She performed lead roles not only in the Philippines but in the United States and Europe and became an international sensation. 

She founded the Asociacion Musical de Filipinas, the Bach Society of the Philippines, and the Artists’ Guild of the Philippines. Fuentes was born in Capiz (now Roxas City).
