Lorenzo Martinez Tañada

AUGUST 10, 1898

Lorenzo Martinez Tañada (August 10, 1898 – May 28, 1992), the “Grand Old Man of Philippine Politics” and the longest serving senator in Philippine history was born in Gumaca, Quezon.  

After the war, he was the chief prosecutor against Japanese collaborators. He served in the first Philippine Senate in 1947 until 1972. 

He then led rallies and demonstrations during the martial law years of Pres. Ferdinand Marcos and was a staunch anti-US bases and anti-nuclear power plant advocate during the presidency of Cory Aquino. 

He died in 1992 at the age of 93.
