The United States Postal Service releases on January 23, 2023, the 46th stamp in the Black Heritage series that honors author Ernest J. Gaines. The stamp features an oil painting based on a photograph of Gaines wearing his trademark beret. A native of Louisiana, Gaines is one of the most celebrated authors in 20th century American literature. He is known for the 1983 novel “A Gathering of Old Men," "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman," a novel in 1971 and “A Lesson Before Dying,” published in 1993 which won the National Humanities Medal and the Pulitzer Prize. It was selected for Oprah Winfrey’s book club. The novel tells the story of an illiterate man who was wrongfully c2ondemned to death. Gaines died in November 2019 at the age of 86.
