Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):
JANUARY 13, 1933
The US Congress passed the Hare-Hawes-Cutting Act, the first law that granted Philippine independence in the next ten years.
This was the result of the OsRox Mission of Sergio Osmeña and Manuel Roxas.
In December 1932, the US Senate passed the bill but was vetoed by Pres. Herbert Hoover. To Hoover’s surprise, Congress overrode his veto and the bill became a law on January 17, 1933.
The act required the Philippine Senate’s approval led by Manuel Quezon, who campaigned against it because of provisions allowing the indefinite stay of the US bases.
