JANUARY 21, 1894
Josefa Jara Martinez (January 21, 1894 - 1987), the pillar of social work in the Philippines, suffragist, and mother of former First Lady Amelita “Ming” Ramos was born in Iloilo.
She was a teacher and principal who was later sent to New York as a government pensionada in 1919.
She finished a degree in social work major in child and family welfare.
Martinez worked to elevate the standard of social work practice and introduced new methods and techniques in social work education.
She was president of the Philippine Association of Social Workers, Inc. (PASWI).
