Japanese Troops Round Up Americans And Allies

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

JANUARY 4, 1942

Americans and foreigners who were allies with the U.S. and Great Britain were rounded up by Japanese troops in Manila and in other places, and were holed up at the University of Santo Tomas.

Gen. Masaharu Homma’s declaration of martial law the previous day, also ordered the surrender of all firearms and people who were caught were detained in Fort Santiago and other detention posts.

To spare the civilians, Gen. Douglas MacArthur and Pres. Manuel Quezon instructed Jorge Vargas, the mayor of Manila, to declare it an open city and to cooperate with Gen. Homma.
