Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):
JANUARY 20, 1872
Around 200 soldiers and laborers led by Sgt. Fernando La Madrid, a Spanish mestizo staged an unsuccessful uprising in Fort San Felipe which came to be known as the Cavite Mutiny.
Their reason to hold the revolt was the personal tax imposed on them by Gov. Gen. Rafael de Izquierdo.
A regiment led by Gen. Felipe Ginovés besieged the fort until all the mutineers surrendered.
Most were executed on sight while the rest were imprisoned.
The mutiny was used by the authorities to implicate and execute Fathers Jose Burgos, Mariano Gomez and Jacinto Zamora.
