Pres. Elpidio Quirino Signs Republic Act No. 333

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 3):

JULY 17, 1948

Pres. Elpidio Quirino signed Republic Act No. 333 declaring Quezon City as the capital of the Philippines and the seat of the national government.

On June 16, 1950, Republic Act No. 537 extended its boundaries to its present area of 15,359 hectares.

It lost its title as capital city of the Philippines after Pres. Ferdinand Marcos signed Presidential Decree No. 940 on June 24, 1976.

In 1938, Pres. Manuel Quezon bought lots from the estate of the Tuason family and called it Bario Obrero. On October 12, 1939, Commonwealth Act 502 established it as Quezon City.
