Gov. William Howard Taft Creates The Manila Medical Society

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

JULY 9, 1902

Gov. William Howard Taft created the Manila Medical Society after he saw the unhygienic and poor condition of the Filipinos.

He also observed that malnutrition and diseases proliferated in the Philippines.

The 7th U.S. Army Corps brigade surgeon, Maj. John Rich McDill was recruited to be its president.

After failing to get U.S. Congress approval for aid and assistance for the healthcare delivery in the islands, Taft made it as the nucleus for the Philippine Islands Medical Association (now the Philippine Medical Association) in 1903 and got the needed assistance.
