Filipino Forces Liberate Pangasinan

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

JULY 22, 1898

Revolutionary forces liberated the province of Pangasinan from the Spaniards.

The Battle of Dagupan was fought between the forces of General Francisco Makabulos, chief of the Central and Directive Committee of Central and Northern Luzon, and the troops of General Federico Ceballos of the Spanish Army.

Earlier, on July 18, 1898, the armies of Daniel Maramba of Santa Barbara, Vicente Prado of San Jacinto and Juan Quezada of Dagupan surrounded Dagupan City.

The Spaniards, holed up in the Catholic church, made their last stand.

General Makabulos, who was appointed as brigadier general by General Emilio Aguinaldo, arrived with his army and strengthened the revolutionary forces.

After days of fighting, a white flag was waved and General Ceballos and Governor Joaquin de Orengochea, along with 1,500 Spanish soldiers surrendered.

General Francisco Makabulos organized the first Katipunan chapter in Tarlac after he was inducted by Ladislao Diwa in 1896.
