Gen. Artemio Ricarte Dies

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

JULY 31, 1945

Gen. Artemio Ricarte (October 20, 1866 - July 31, 1945) known as the Father of the Philippine Army died at the age of 78 in Hungduan, Ifugao. 

Also known in the Katipunan as Vibora (Viper), he led his men in many battles in Cavite, Laguna and Batangas against the Spanish forces during the Philippine Revolution. 

He also fought the Americans during the Philippine-American War. In 1900, he was captured and deported to Guam together with Apolinario Mabini. 

Ricarte refused to take the oath of allegiance to the United States.
