Apolinario Mabini

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):

JULY 23, 1864

Apolinario Mabini y Maranan (July 23, 1864 - May 13, 1903), the “Brains of the Katipunan” and the “Sublime Paralytic” was born in Barangay Talaga, Tanauan, Batangas from a poor family.

He finished law, supported the reform movement and joined the Katipunan. In 1896, he got sick with polio that paralyzed his legs.

He wrote a war manifesto that warned revolutionary leaders that Spain will cede the Philippines to America.

This caught Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo’s attention who sought for him. Mabini later became Aguinaldo’s trusted adviser and prime minister.
