Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
October 5, 1994
World Teachers' Day was established on October 5, 1994. It is an international day annually held to celebrate teachers and their work.
The celebration also commemorates the signing of the recommendation by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The "ILO/UNESCO Recommendation of 1966 concerning the Status of Teachers" is a standard-setting instrument that addresses the status and situations of teachers around the world.
The recommendation outlines the standards relating to education personnel policy, recruitment, and initial training and the continuing education of teachers, their employment, and working conditions.
World Teachers' Day aims to focus on "appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world" and to provide an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching.
It is co-convened in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF and Education International (EI). More than 100 countries all over the world commemorate World Teachers' Day with their own celebrations.
