Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):
OCTOBER 5, 1762
Augmented by heavy bombardment from the British fleet under Rear-Admiral Samuel Cornish, Brig. Gen. William Draper ordered his troops to advance and capture the walled city of Intramuros.
The Spanish troops were no match against the superior British forces. Seeing the futility of further resistance, Archbishop Manuel Antonio Rojo surrendered Manila.
British troops immediately looted churches, government offices, the Governor General’s Palace and the houses of wealthy residents. Rape, killings and vandalism were also committed by the invaders.
