Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):
OCTOBER 16, 1907
The 1st Philippine Assembly, the Lower House with 80 representatives duly elected in a national election, was inaugurated at the Grand Opera House.
Secretary of War William Howard Taft and Governor-General James Francis Smith attended the event with Sergio Osmeña as Speaker and Manuel Quezon as Majority Floor Leader. The American-dominated Philippine Commission became the Upper House.
The Jones Law changed the set-up, and on October 16, 1916, the Philippine Legislature composed of the Senate and House of Representatives was inaugurated.
