Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 3):
October 5, 2015 and 2021
Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. announced on October 5, 2015 that he will run for vice president in the 2016 elections. On October 15, 2015, presidential candidate Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago announced that Marcos will be her running mate.
However, he lost to Camarines Sur Representative Leni Robredo by a small margin while Santiago lost to Rodrigo Roa Duterte of Davao City.
He challenged the results and filed an electoral protest against Robredo on June 29, 2016. After a recount in April 2018 in selected precincts handpicked by the camp of Marcos, the PET dismissed the protest after it established Robredo's lead.
On October 5, 2021, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced his plan to run as president under the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas party. He assumed chairmanship of the party on the same day while his former party, the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan also endorsed him. On November 16, 2021, Marcos announced his running mate was Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, the daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte.
Their campaign theme of unity, was called UniTeam. Marcos and Duterte won by a landslide, becoming the first running mate pair to win together since 2004. They were also the first that the majority elected since the establishment of the Fifth Republic in 1986.
Ferdinand Marcos Jr. took the oath of office as the 17th President of the Philippines before Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo on June 30, 2022, at 12:00 noon, at the National Museum of the Philippines.
