Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
October 4, 1969
President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed Proclamation No. 614 on October 4, 1969 declaring October 4 as Shoe Industry Day.
The proclamation mentioned that the Philippine Shoe Industry is one of the country’s major cottage industries, and it is fitting to give due recognition to the contribution of the shoe industry to economic development.
President Marcos also acknowledged shoemaker Mateo Evangelista by awarding him a trophy as the country's best shoemaker (sapatero), in a nationwide competition that kicked off the Shoe Industry Day.
The trophy is housed inside the Marikina City Hall. The shoe business of Mateo and his wife Cresencia, that was built from scratch in the eighties, is continued by his son Noel in the same location in Daang Bakal.
Marikina is the Shoe Capital of the Philippines and is the home of the world’s largest pair of shoes certified by the Guinness Book of World Records.
The Shoe Museum, also in Markina, houses the famous shoes of first lady Imelda R. Marcos. The cultural and heritage site, Kapitan Moy, is the ancestral house of Don Laureano Guevara, the father of the shoe industry in the Philippines. Kapitan Moy, Marikina's captain municipal manufactured the first pair of shoes in 1887.
