OCTOBER 8, 1897
Emilio Jacinto, known by his pen name Dimas-Ilaw, wrote his masterpiece, A La Patria (To the Fatherland).
The poem was written under the shade of the coconut trees in Sta. Cruz, Laguna while mourning the death of Katipunan Supremo Andres Bonifacio, his close friend.
The composition was inspired by Jose Rizal’s Mi Ultimo Adios (My Last Farewell), and was Jacinto’s farewell to Bonifacio, who was killed by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo’s men.
The “Brains of the Katipunan” was also considered the greatest writer of the revolution.
