Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):
OCTOBER 3, 1603
Eng Kang, a rich Chinese merchant led the Sangley Rebellion in Manila and attacked Tondo and Quiapo by burning the buildings and killing the inhabitants.
On their way to apprehend the rebels, former Gov. Luis Perez Dasmariñas and his men were ambushed and killed with their heads mounted on poles and displayed all over Manila.
The Spaniards, Filipinos and Japanese joined forces and successfully repulsed the rebels who retreated to the hills of Laguna after a failed attempt to capture the city. 20,000 Chinese were killed in the retaliatory attacks.
