Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition):
OCTOBER 15, 1900
Lt. Col. Maximo Abad, the Chief of the Revolutionary Forces in Marinduque released Capt. Devereux Shields and his men in Buenavista, after Gen. Luther Rector Hare arrived and harassed the towns.
Earlier, on September 13, 1900, Shields along with 52 men from the 29th U.S. Volunteers went to the mountains of Torrijos to capture Abad and his guerrillas.
The Battle of Pulang Lupa began when Shields and his troops engaged Abad’s forces but were surprised to be surrounded on all sides. Defeated and wounded, Shields raised a white flag to surrender.
