JUNE 8, 1942
Shizuichi Tanaka, commander of the 14th Army of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), was appointed Military Governor of the Philippines during World War II.
He succeeded Gen. Masaharu Homma who was the first military governor of the country.
He came from Hyugo Perfecture and graduated at the IJA Academy and the Army Staff College.
He studied at Oxford University and earned an English literature degree.
Tanaka was a commander of the IJA 2nd Infantry Regiment, a military attache to Washington D.C., chief of staff of the IJA 4th Division, head of the Kempeitai, and commander of the IJA 13th Division.
He was relieved as military governor on May 28, 1943 and returned to Japan to recover from Malaria.
Tanaka shot himself through the heart on August 24, 1945 in his office in Tokyo.
He felt responsible for the damage caused by the Allied bombings in Tokyo.
