Juan de Salcedo Sails To Vigan

Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):

JUNE 12, 1572

Conquistador Juan de Salcedo, the grandson of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, sailed from Manila on May 20, 1572 with 80 men and arrived in Vigan.

King Philip II of Spain ordered him to explore the coast of Los Ilocano.

After the successful expedition, Salcedo founded the "Villa Fernandina de Vigan" in honor of Prince Ferdinand, the king's son who died when he was 4 years old.

As a reward for his services to the Spanish Crown, the king awarded him the province of Ylocos composed of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, La Union, and parts of the Mountain Province as his encomienda and was given the title Justicia Mayor de esta Provincia de Ylocos.

Salcedo came back to Vigan in January 1574 and brought with him Augustinian missionaries to evangelize Ylocos and established a Spanish city.
