Today in Philippine History (Philatelic Edition Series 2):
JUNE 14, 1960
U.S. President Dwight Eisenhower arrived in Manila for a state visit, the first such visit made by an American president.
His plane arrived from Clark Air Field and was met by Pres. Carlos P. Garcia together with Philippine and American officials.
He was given a welcome ceremony at the airport and later proceeded to Luneta Park where a military parade greeted him and thousands of Filipinos gathered to take a glimpse of the president.
He addressed Congress and was awarded an honorary doctorate degree at the University of the Philippines.
He was also conferred the Order of Sikatuna, Rank of Raja, the highest of the order of diplomatic merit. Eisenhower was the first American president to receive such honor.
His visit to the Philippines was a sentimental one.
When Gen. Douglas MacArthur was the military adviser to the Philippine Commonwealth government in 1935, he was second in command and stayed in the country for 4 years.
